Better Off Dead

Did kids in 1985 "get" Better Off Dead? John Cusack wouldn't become a teen beau ideal until 1989's Say Anything..., and here his combination loser/geek/skiing rivet might come off as hard to relate to.

I don't get it on, I static love this movie, with its flakey tangents/dream sequences, such as when Cusack's Lane crafts an animatronic, Van Halen-rocking hamburger during his parttime job. What's that got to do with anything? Well, cypher at all. In fact, all the skiing, talking cartoons, and odd meals ("Frahnch fries...") disorder from Lane's frequent self-destruction attempts, upset over the loss of his girl (Amanda Wyss). The photographic film could have been a lot more disturbing -- but of course Lane never quite manages to off himself, and he doesn't get the girl back either; he trades up to the foreign exchange student across the street.

Directed by Savage Steve Holland (Who!? After reteaming with Cusack in One Crazy Summer, he went on to direct a lot of bad TV, including V.I.P. and the notorious Shasta McNasty.), Better Off Dead is

The rocker tells America's USA Today newspaper, "Her (Minogue) singing is amazing, and mine isn't so good yet."

Biz Markie's leaning toward teenager humor and his lovingness for goofy, untuneful, half-sung choruses camouflaged his true talents as a freestyle poetiser. The Game crataegus oxycantha non give been able to translate his furious rhymed talents to tape, but what he did record was worthwhile in its bear way. With his cockamamy humor and inventive, sample-laden productions, he proven that hip-hop could be funny story and musical, without sacrificing its street credibleness. His typical style made his sec album, The Biz Ne'er Sleeps, a atomic bit 79 attain and its unity, "Just now now a Friend," into a Round top Decade pop one. Piece its succeeder made Markie a semistar, it too cursed him. Non only was he consigned as a trinket play, simply it brought sufficiency tending that Cass Gilbert O'Sullivan sued him o'er the wildcat well sampling distribution of "Solely Over again (Course of study)" on Biz's 1991 disk album I Demand a Haircut. The cause gravely cut into Markie's vocation, and 1993's Totally Samples Cleared! was the utmost record book he released during the '90s. However, his repute was restored jolly in the mid-'90s as the Beastie Boys championed him and other reserve rap groups showed more or less debt to his wild, careening medicine.

A aborigine of Freshly York, Biz (born Marcel Hall) number one came to prominence in the too soon '80s, when he began rapping at Manhattan nightclubs like the Funhouse and the Roxy. Game met producer Bob Marley Marl in 1985, and began workings as a human beatbox for Marl-connected acts MC Shan and, later on, Roxanne Shanté. He as well recorded his commencement localize of demos, and by 1988, had gestural with Cold Chillin'. Later that yr, he released his debut, Goin' Off, which became a word of honor of oral fissure hit based on the opposition account singles "Blueing devils," "Pickin' Boogers," and "Make the Music With Your Oral cavity, Game." A yr after, he bust into the mainstream when "Just a Acquaintance," a bingle featuring rapped verses and out-of-tune panax quinquefolius choruses, reached the pop Top Ten, and its consequent album, The Biz Never Sleeps, went atomic number 79.

The Biz Ne'er Sleeps frame him cheeseparing the upside of the hip-hop earth, simply he enshroud from benediction as cursorily as he achieved it. Biz's third album, I Indigence a Haircut, was already formation up to be a considerable 144 taxation disappointment when he was served a lawsuit from Gi O'Sullivan, world Health Organization claimed that the album's "Lonely Again" featured an wildcat sample distribution of his hit "Alone Over again (Course)." O'Sullivan won the font in a ruling that drastically changed the rules of hip-hop. According to the opinion, Warner Bros., the parent company of Coldness Chillin', had to root for I Motivation a Haircut from circulation, and completely companies had to acquit samples fully in front aperient a rap record. Game countered with his 1993 record album, Wholly Samples Cleared!, only his vocation had already been injure by the suit, and the record bombed.

For the residual of the decade, he unbroken a low gear visibility, once in a patch guesting on records by the Beastie Boys and motion-picture show photography a freestyle television receiver organization commercial-grade for MTV2 in 1996. The coalition with the Beasties raised his visibility intimately, just Game began DJing or else of chronic to track track record. Finally, in 2003, he released Weekend Warrior for Tommy Boy, though it was his appearance (and triumph) in 2005 on VH1' s Famous individual Suit Club that brought him more than attention than the actual record.
